Tom’s energy and passion for education was very evident. He told his story of coming into a challenging situation and seeing the opportunity of making an example of what could be: a thriving educational campus of learning. An educator of 40 years, Tom is blessed with four children of his own. Wiseburn has over time, developed what is known as the DaVinci model emphasizing Sience, Design and Communication.
Each student is viewed as being gifted and unique. Cover 108 zip codes, this “college prep” school has four sites, 297 staff, and 2300 students. Culturally, the student population is widely mixed inclusive of African-American, Asian, Latino, and European descents. Class room sizes vary according the needs of the student and subject. There is a sense of continuity and yet adaptability creating and maintaining a strong call of education.
As the reporter for this week, I was moved by such passion and dedication for our up-coming generations. Education is any culture is one that needs the community and nation’s highest attention. Tom clearly has that focus and it is and was a great pleasure to have him with us this past week.
As the Wheels of Rotary continue to turn in our club, let us celebrate the commitment and dedication of all educators. They hold and teach our children and youth, setting examples of “Service above Self”,
