Much to the delight of PV teens and their families, the Palos Verdes Friends of the Library is building an annex for local school students as a safe place to go after school to relax and read. Colleen Cotter, the Executive Director of the Peninsula Friends of the Library, shared the plans and progress on the growth of the new annex at the January 18th meeting of the Rotary Club. The Annex is designed to accommodate 400 children each month and will occupy adjacent space at the current Library on Deep Valley Drive in Rolling Hills Estates. It is a wonderful addition for our community.
Construction will begin on the annex in February, and it is scheduled to be open next summer. Colleen Cotter also spoke about the breadth and depth of the Library District generally. She indicated they do 1200 informational programs annually, that they accommodate more than 750 groups that need meeting space annually and that the District is planning to sponsor travel programs for residents. The Friends of the Library contribute significant financial support for the three Libraries in the District.
Our Rotary Foundation supported the grant funding with a $10,000 gift from the PVP Rotary Club to the Library for this project. These funds will be used to support the cost of a video screen and projector where teens can watch movies and make presentations. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Library District has widespread community use and support of its many services and is a model for a community-based Library linked to the entire world. It is a special place where young and old congregate to feed their imaginations, keep their minds sharp and access information. Our three Libraries are magical in the tone they set for those who enter their doors.
