Hope you had a nice, relaxing weekend and are looking forward to Friday when Rick Mendoza will be reporting on the alarming Polio situation in the US. Don't miss it.
Last Wednesday evening, PVP Rotary members met for WNL at ICAN, a local non-profit that empowers people with disabilities to say, "I can." ICAN is doing wonderful work teaching people with disabilities how to care for themselves, and how to build life and work skills.
As someone who has worked with a variety of at-risk communities, the things you hear most often is, "I want to work," or "I don't want to be a burden on anyone." Not only does ICAN teach the skills and provide the resources to facilitate a working life, think vans to and from work. They also provide the support network and community for their clients to manage the ups-and-downs of daily life and working. Groups meet regularly so that clients can process what's happening to them out in the world in a safe space with their peers. It is truly a special program and wonderful space.
FYI, they rent out the facility for events if you ever need one. If you missed it, we can attest to the fact that their kitchen is fabulous.
Many thanks to Suzy Zimmerman for introducing us to ICAN and to the WNL dream team pictured below for helping out!
