In case you missed us July 24!
By Christine Barnicki

Queen Eileen Hupp presided
Suzy Seamans greeted everyone as they logged on virtually
John Schuricht, strumming his uke, accompanied his solo performance of our patriotic song, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame," sung in honor of pro baseball's opening day yesterday. (Dodgers won! Yea!)
Pastor Kenny Bowen inspired us, and Phyllis Pelezzare led us in the flag salute
ANNOUNCEMENTS
• Virginia Butler was lauded as one of several who helped establish the Palos Verdes Estates Foundation.
• The Queen, on behalf of Jonathan Udewitz, asked us to set up auto payment of our dues
• Carmenza Adams will be inducted August 7
• Joey Komada has resigned. We thanked her for her many, many years of service as a Rotarian.
• The Queen reminded us that time is a good time to invite others to attend a Rotary meeting.
• DISTRICT BREAKFAST, August 4. 7:30 Zoom opens / 8 program begins
Speaker Craig Needham will share the inspirational story of his mother, who was diagnosed with polio at the age of 29 and lived in an iron lung for 13 years. More information here: https://rotary5280.org/event/virtual-district-breakfast-1/. Advance registration required. Register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BL0zrkUqSnG0IgBaenELSw
• Julia Parton reported on our club's efforts to collect baby products and household items for Marine families at Camp Pendleton. Among the items donated were 2,000+ diapers and 3,000+ wipes, and Julia's office was overflowing with many other wonderful goods. The District's collection point, Karen Greenberg and David Hensler's home in Torrance, was filled to capacity and more as donations from District clubs arrived for packing and transport to the Marine Corps base.
• Julia Parton acknowledged June and July birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and Rotary induction anniversaries in a very nice photo-video. Especially notable was the 65th wedding anniversary of Helen and Rick Mendoza!
SPEAKER
Lauren Dennis-Perelmuter spoke today about how she and her business, "Art to Grow On," established in 2000, have adapted to national events, most notably 9-11 and COVID-19. In March this year when schools, camps, scout troops, special-needs children's hospitals, and more were closed, Lauren reimagined her previous in-person, hands-on art presentations. Literally repackaging them, she now offers art boxes for online purchasing, with each box focusing on a great master, such as Monet, Frank Lloyd Wright, Picasso, Andy Warhol, and others. "A perfect way to entertain 3–11-year olds while they stay at home during the COVID crisis," says Lauren. For details, go to https://art2growon.com/.
NEXT WEEK
Speakers from The Innocense Project, which exonerates the wrongly convicted through DNA testing and works to reform the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.
RAFFLE WINNER
Kath Anderson will receive her choice of red or white wine (within the club's budget, of course), or a gift card from Good Stuff or Starbucks.

ZOOM WITH US THIS FRIDAY!

All the way from New York, we are excited to welcome this coming Friday our speakers from The Innocence Project.

Founded in 1992 at the Cardozo School of Law (Yeshiva University), The Innocence Project exonerates the wrongly convicted through DNA testing and reforms the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.  This promises to be a moving and highly topical presentation.

You might be interested in checking out their website in advance or watching the Netflix documentary.

Consider inviting friends who might be interested in learning more about Rotary!  One of the benefits of zoom is that it allows us to easily invite guests.
