In Case You Missed Us... September 27, 2019

The speaker

Friday’s Rotary speaker, Dr. David Hart, shared critical health information for all of us!

As the Director of Clinical Services at Torrance’s Always Best Care Senior Service, he regularly speaks to groups about dementia and Alzheimer’s, which is a type of dementia.

In addition to explaining the different types of dementia, he suggests a four-pronged approach to help prevent it:
  1. Exercise  is the # 1 method of prevention – We all should be trying to walk 10,000 steps each day, walk regularly, work out at a gym, lift free weights, etc.
  2. Next most important is Diet – We should be consuming a Mediterranean diet – fish, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while avoiding processed foods
  3. Avoiding loneliness – A healthy social life is important
  4. Brain activities – Learning new things, working, solving complex problems, etc.

Dr. Hart suggests some of the reasons for increased incidences of dementia in the US adult population:
  1. People are living longer, thanks to better medical care, so while not dying of other causes, dementia is setting in with aging
  2. Family history of dementia increases the risk by 40%
  3. Diabetes greatly increases the risk of dementia
  4. Obesity, smoking, and hypertension increased the risk by 75% to 85%
  5. Cardiovascular problems increase the risk by 2.5 to 3 times

The assembled Rotarians were encouraged to put in practice the four-pronged approach mentioned above to help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s dimentia.

Interact at Pen Hi

Peninsula High School AP physics teacher Mike Spaulding is the campus adviser to the school's revived Interact club sponsored by PVP Rotary.    Raised in a Rotary family,  Mike is the son of John Spalding, M.D., who was a charter member of our club.  Interact is a Rotary sponsored youth organization for students between 12 and 18 years old.  Interact involves as many as 200,000 youth through more than 10,000 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas. Interact clubs focus on developing leadership skills and humanitarian projects,

Mike is a graduate of LMU (B.S., biochemistry). As an educator, Mike is pioneering a teaching format called "The Flip Side."  Popularized by Khan Academy, the concept of "flipping the classroom" is to have students learn at home, with a video lecture, and then work on homework problems in the class while the teacher guides students who are stuck on a problem. A benefit of flipping the classroom is that some misunderstandings may occur while working on homework, and without an experienced teacher to guide through.

Mike will introduce several of his energetic students at our meeting.  He will be introduced by Greg O'Brien.
