In Case You Missed Us…April 26, 2019
Eileen Hupp

Lots of REAL news happening at our Club…  We are THRILLED to welcome our newest Club member, Mitch Harmatz, sponsored by President Marc.  Mitch is the Communications Director at Beacon House in San Pedro and a former member of the San Pedro Rotary Club.  PDG Rick Mendoza did a stellar job leading the Induction Ceremony.  Rick encouraged Mitch (and all of us!) to get involved in the many activities of our Club.
Julia and Suzy relaxing and enjoying our meeting!

And speaking of activities, it’s “all hands on deck” for the fast approaching Beer & Wine Festival on May 19.  This is our Club’s biggest fundraiser.  The proceeds from last year’s Festival funded such projects as the two International Projects we just completed in Peru, the Sheriff’s Station Kitchen Remodel, two Mobile Medical Clinics, the Sharefest project, the Stop Hunger Now project, the San Pedro Peninsula YMCA Youth & Government grant, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy grant, sending two students to RYLA, scholarships, Rotary District Speech Contest, the End Polio Now contribution and MORE!
ALL Club members are asked to:  SELL TICKETS, put up posters (see Greg S if you need them), DONATE items for Silent Auction (a big opportunity to make $), AND VOLUNTEER on MAY 19.  Julia will once again be coordinating the Volunteer signups…unless you are out of town that weekend, you are expected to volunteer for at least one three hour shift!    Also, volunteers can purchase a ticket for themselves for only $30.  We have a record number of participating breweries, wineries and restaurants.  Finally, Kath has raffle tickets which you can pre-sell (winner need not be present) …there are two $500 cash prizes…Just another way we can all pitch in and help make this the most profitable festival yet!!

Other news…there is NO Club meeting on May 3.  However, the Club Board of Directors will meet at 12 noon on May 3.  So, we hope you will join us for WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE this week…. We will be at PV Bowl on Crenshaw Blvd.  from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday, May 1.  Food & beverages, bowling (if you’d like), AND lots of great Rotary fellowship!   Thanks, Jonathan, for organizing another fun evening!

And now on to our Guest Speakers...  Our Club was honored to welcome Kurth DeMoss (Juliet’s husband) and Louie Rosada from Medical Mission Adventures.   Kurth and Louie presented a comprehensive overview of all the services that are offered to clients at the Mobile Medical Clinics that our Club has done with them over the past several years.   When MMA first started, their focus was on international projects.  However, they quickly came to the realization that the need for health care screening and services is critical right here, as they said, “in our own backyard”.
Each clinic serves, on average, about eighty patients and offers a range of services from health screening to dental, vision, immunizations, and more.  Many of our Club members have volunteered at the Mobile Clinics over the past several years, and Jack Goldberg encouraged those of us who haven’t yet participated in one of these to do so…he said “It’s a really worthwhile thing to do!”

PVP Rotary Supports Local Youth

Twenty-five local middle and high school students pitched their businesses for startup funding to a packed house at Trump National Golf Club this past Tuesday evening.

A huge THANK YOU to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club Foundation for supporting this program with a grant for the third year!

Our Rotary Club was acknowledged multiple times at the event, including in the printed program.

President Marc represented our Rotary Club on the JUDGES PANEL.  Marc and four other judges had the challenging task of scoring all the students and selecting the top five businesses.

Emma Delgado Ballesta, a 7th grader, will travel to New York in two weeks to represent the PVP Chamber in the national Young Entrepreneurs Academy competition.

Both Marc and Derald attended the Young Entrepreneurs Investors Panel – aka Shark Tank – on April 16.
