The weather was perfect and our members kept looking out the window wishing they could be two places at once. Jim Hartman opened the meeting with an invocation, Christine Barnicki led the pledge and Richard Good encouraged us to ask in song that "God Bless America". He also recited the opening verse Irving Berlin wrote, something our club might learn to enhance our rendition of the song. After David Rowe finished the guest introductions, he led our club's proprietary "Welcome Song".

 

Announcements included Greg Sparkman asking for potential poster locations for the 2018 Beer & Wine Fest. Pres. Marc Mazarow announced that he would be absent the following week since he was joining the District 5280 humanitarian project in Peru.

 

Our guest speaker was Past District 5340 Governor Larry Scott, who for many years has spearheaded Rotary's efforts to encourage immunizations for everyone, not just those in developing countries.  Childhood diseases such as measles and whooping cough are making a comeback because parents aren't getting their children immunized.  He said the biggest problem wasn't in disadvantaged areas, but rather in affluent communities where parents have been believing the "fake news" about the risks of immunization.  Seniors also need to get immunized for pneumonia and shingles.  PDG Scott implored us merely to talk to our family and friends about getting our shots, and encourage them to do so.  That would protect us all.
