In Case You Missed Us…November 15, 2019
By Kath Anderson

Our second Breakfast meeting for Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary was held last Friday 11/15/2019.
President Derald presided and spoke about the two projects to be held the next day on Saturday- 11/16/21 - Rise Against Hunger Project, and the Mobile Medical Clinic to be held at Beacon House in San Pedro.
The winner of the club contest open to members for a “Best New Project” was John Schuricht.  $500.00 will go towards the MJ Project non profit and library books needed in an needy school. Thank you to John, John Polen, Joey Komada, and Evan Rees for submitting projects.
Member updates:
Lynne advised us that AJ, a former member of the club, had a stroke while on vacation with wife Patty while in Hawaii. He was expected to be able to return to the mainland later today. Also, Mel is recovering from his fall.
Derald provided more details on our new project in the works dealing with the hungry, homeless local college students at El Camino College. There is a list of food items that are needed to collect for the food pantry - see list below.  We will begin collecting food items at our Nov 22 meeting. Please review the list and bring your nonperishable items to the club.  The dates of drop off to the school will be arranged.  More details on drop off dates will be announced later as our plan is to get the project started and grow it to include other Rotary Clubs  and include other Rotary clubs who have expressed interest in being involved.
Suzy Zimmerman introduced our guest speaker, Rosa Pesenti. Rosa is a Board member of a project called Maria’s Closet, whose mission is to help outfit senior girls with the proper attire to attend their Prom dances. With the idea of instilling confidence and empowering the girls by helping to transform them and fulfill a dream they never thought possible. Prom attire and ticket fees can run up to $400-$500. This daunting obligation is beyond the reach of many girls in the San Pedro area, living just a short distance away from more financially secure neighborhoods on the peninsula. There are many girls in need regardless of zip code, but Maria’s Closet needed to start somewhere, and that was initially at the Port of LA Boys and Girls Club.
They were able to get new and gently used dresses donated to the cause.  The girls can select an appropriate dress and keep it. No give backs, unless they want to. For many young ladies, this is the first fancy dress that they could call “their own”. The transformation on the gals is magical. Rosa brought in framed pictures of many of the beauties instead of a slide show.  They feel cared about, that they matter. Why would a stranger apply their time and energy for me? Their smiles were captivating.
To initiate the fund raising for the teenagers, Maria’s Closet held an adult prom at The Dalmatian Club. A sold out event! They were able to raise $15,000 at that event 3 years ago. The next event will be held 3/22/20 with a Roaring 20’s Theme.  The funds raised will continue to supply dresses, jewelry, and makeup. Scholarships are also now being offered.
You may imagine that there is a component of prom that is missing from the above, mainly the guys. This year will be the first year that Maria’s closet will be able to obtain about 40 tuxedos for Joe’s Closet. This sounds like the beginning of something truly great.
Education of good social behavior and skills is key to expanding the world to the younger adults in our society. Having a chance to participate by having doors open to opportunities that these gals (and guys) didn’t think would exist for them- can be a game changer.  If you would like to help by donating dresses, jewelry, money for makeup and other accessories, have a chat with our Suzy Zimmerman who is also on the Board of Maria’s Closet.
