In Case You Missed Us…April 5, 2019

While President Marc, Harry and Joey were in Peru...
We honored Mel...

The Mo (Mel) You Know

What a fantastic tribute it was to our very own fellow Rotarian, Melvin Schrier. A longtime member of our club since 2003, he was honored with this special meeting to acknowledge and share all that he has accomplished and contributed during his life.
The presentation started on a fun note with Lynne sharing about Mel’s interest in the HBO series, Sex in the City. Yes, Mel knew all about Carrie Bradshaw’s gal pals and boyfriends and could even recall the name of her favorite pair of shoes by Manolo Blahnik.
Judy spoke about Mel’s career and education which is quite impressive. He graduated High School at age 15 and went on to earn degrees from five major colleges.  He was in private practice in New York City from 1950 – 1996. He is the inventor of the Eye-Tech Screening systems and the professional Eye Chart used today. Mel was even the Eye Doctor to the Muppets and appeared on several TV talk shows including Johnny Carson.
Christine shared about Mel’s Philanthropic projects including his vast collection of restaurant menus which he donated to the Library. Mel has written numerous publications and articles in medical reference journals and magazines. He also authored several articles in the Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance program from 2001 – 2009.
Babs Dizon talked about Mel’s world travels to over 90 countries and shared some funny stories of predicaments they found themselves in during their world travels.
Lastly, Mel shared a video presentation of his life which included his humorous narrative of accounts. He ended by talking about his goals during his tenure in his role as “President for the Day”, and then plans for his demotion dinner.
As member Jim Hartman stated, the tribute was special, just like Mel. Thank you to our club members who attended and participated and thank you to Greg Sparkman for putting together the video presentation.
When Mel was asked of all the things he has done and accomplished in his 94 years of life, what else was on his bucket list?  Mel responded, “To get to 95.”
Mel, you are an inspiration to all of us and we are blessed to know you.
Our Peace Chair, Geoffrey Nadler shared about another successful Peace Facilitation event at Peavey Middle School in Gardena where there were 30 students and 4 facilitators talking about violence and safety in schools. He said Vice President Davian Freeman was so enthusiastic and asked if they could return again in May. Geoff shared a poster the kids had made thanking the group for coming and facilitating this event for them. Thank you Geoff for all your efforts in your role as Peace Chair. We sure do appreciate you.

Our Rotarians volunteered at a Rotary-sponsored M0bile Medical clinic at the Boys & Girls Club at the LA Port on April 13th. It was a very successful event with 80 patients served.
