In Case You Missed Us... October 25, 2019

By Jack Goldberg

On a very hot day (around 90 degrees) it was nice to be in an air-conditioned meeting, overlooking the fabulous PV Golf Club.

Derald Sidler was out, so Past President Julia Parton ran the meeting and opened up with a cute blonde joke.  After the invocation, pledge and patriotic song, we chowed down.

The following accouchement were made, after the guest introductions and our club song (sung very off key as there was no piano??):

Volunteer opportunity with Harbor Interfaith, San Pedro. Harbor Interfaith is looking for volunteers to help with food distribution on December 23, two shifts available: 9:00am-12:30pm or 12:30-4:00pm. See Julia Parton if you are interested.

Joan Behrens and Jim Hartman spoke about the Educator of The Year Event on November 6.  As it is our major Rotary event of the year, Jim asked the members to please attend. Contact Julia if you would like to attend. Cost for non-sponsoring rotary members, $45; guests $75.00

Duncan Sutton spoke about the Rise against Hunger (packing meals for third world countries) event on November 16th 9-12 noon, at the Torrance YMCA. If interested, RSVP to Duncan. Juliet DeMoss spoke about the Mobile Medical Clinic at Beacon House (dentists, doctors, nurses, and eye care professionals attending to those in need), November 16, 7:30AM-5:00PM, in San Pedro. Both events need volunteers.
Greg O’Brien also discussed the speaker for next Friday’s Rotary meeting, which will be Jeane Barrett, who is the highest ranking female in the fire department. Her location is Station 106, across from the Norris Theater. Jeane will be speaking, unless she is called to fight one of our current major wild fires.

Rick Mendoza made a Paul Harris pin presentation to Greg Obrien, who is a major donor to the Rotary Foundation. He also noted that as of October 17th Rick announced that polio type 3 has been eradicated.
Julia introduced our speaker, head football coach David Young of Peninsula High. David is a San Pedro native, living currently in San Pedro with his wife and two kids. He played football for Mary Star and then Washington State. David has taught at the PVPUSD for over 20 years, many at PV High and the past 4 years at Pen High. He loves working with young athletes to bring them up to their full potential. He teaches a hard work ethic, personal responsibility, and sportsmanship. He also stresses giving back to the community and doing other charitable work as a team.
He took over the Pen High football team when the team was defunct, four years ago. He had 32 boys at that time, and now has well over a 100 participating. This year there were enough players to field three levels of teams: freshman, junior and varsity. Many schools are unable to field all three levels.
Several of his graduates have gone on to play college ball, and he really helps them to get placed in colleges, as he has many friends who are coaches in different colleges. He also teaches physical education, sports medicine, and nutrition classes at Pen.
One a side note, David Rowe mentioned that his daughters texted him (during the meeting) on how much they loved Coach Young when they had him as a teacher…and actually had a crush on him. David Rowe then commented that his wife also texted him that even the wives has crushes on him! (Too much information, Dave.)
I was happy to be at this luncheon, as Coach Young is a very good speaker, very interesting and entertaining.

Raffle winners were Henry Lee and Christine Barnicki! Julia ended the program with another fine blonde joke!
