Story # 2
Speaker
Mike Freidman is a docent at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Mike had many details of the history of the Peninsula. The reason so many fossils can be found throughout our area is that it was once under water. Only through the power of combating tectonic plates was the peninsula able to rise above the sea level.
The first humans were here about 8,000-10,000 years ago.
The Tongva is the name of the people who lived throughout the L.A. basin but are not a designated tribe, per se. When the Spaniards decided to settle the area, life changed for the Tongva people. The era of the missions began in the 1700's and were only able to be built with the work of the enslaved native people. Names like Sepulveda, and later Vanderlip, developed the area using their imagination to bring us to where we are today.
