Friday January 5th Rotary Speaker | We were treated today to a slide show by one of our world traveling members Dr. Mel Schier.  Mel and his wife Cynthia traversed the globe for many years - learning about other cultures and history - with Mel taking copious pictures along the way.  Today we saw photographs of their cruise to Dubai, Fujairah and India.   With his quick wit Mel started his program by saying he longed for “the good old days” - quipping “Oh to be 90 again”.  Mel had prepared a lovely sound track to go with his presentation but alas technology did not cooperate as the music died only a few minutes into the program.  But it turned out just as well - as it was interesting to be able to fling questions at him as we viewed the photographs.  We learned you can have tea at one of the tallest buildings in the world (Burj Khalifa) for only $200.  But if you didn’t want to spring for the big bucks and just wanted to look at the building you could enter for only $100 per person.  We saw photographs of incredible shopping malls - one with a 3 story aquarium and the other with an indoor ski run.   We saw the contrast with the old souks (market places) where there were spices galore and gold everywhere.   And of course we saw lots of mosques.  Travel enriches all of us - whether it’s to Dubai or Des Moines - and we thank Mel for sharing one of his experiences.
