Prez Keith says . . .

Fines are a powerful tool. I appreciate all the respect I was able to command with this tool at our July 16 meeting.

We wish to thank Kent Campbell, our speaker. Kent was also the inaugural recipient of our "Gift of Mobility Certificate." Those who have mailed me their wheelchair pledge money, thank you. The dead line is July 26.

We were pleased to have past District Governor Chuck Anderson join us for a make-up meeting. He has 21 years of perfect attendance. Please mark the date August 6 for Governor Doug Baker's visit to our Club.

I encourage all members to begin joining us at noon to allow more "social time" with fellow Rotarians. Meetings will begin promptly at 12:15. I would like to provide members an opportunity to dine without interruptions. I cannot do this if we start late.

Please update your Club Runner profile.

Do you want to understand the impact of the new "smart meter" So Cal Edison is installing at your residence? Join us this Friday to hear Bernice Maldonado enlighten us.

See you then!

How to Manage Your Internet Reputation

--by Inga Liden

The topic was "Protect Your Online Reputation" and Kent Campbell was our speaker. Greg O'Brien gave an impressive introduction and added that Kent is a Rotarian! Greg pointed out that he had googled his own name and found his reputation was harmed by a comment from an unknown (the writer is always anonymous) individual who felt Judge Greg had been unfair during courtroom proceedings. "Well, that IS disturbing," said Greg. And with that Kent started.

He looked at all of us sitting there on edge of our chairs, scared to learn what harm was done to each of us in space, on the Internet, right this minute. Kent promised to inform us how we can avoid having our reputations ruined by the Internet. Prez Keith was at the laptop clicking PowerPoint illustrations, which are available on Kent's website (see below).

The first question was "how many have googled themselves?" After Greg's comment, I knew we were all fearing what we would find out about ourselves that was not the truth. Kent declared that Google's power and influence worldwide is at such a high that people consider whatever is written on Google to be The Truth. That reminded me of my childhood in Stockholm (Sweden) when there was ONE radio channel and NO TV, and my grandfather listened to the radio news as if it were the absolute truth, which my parents told me was only a newsreporter's word. As Machiavelli pointed out, "the world is not what it seems to be." However, as long as the world thinks Google is the truth, one had better go defensive!

Kent stressed that there is no name when adding dirty information about a person. Kent said it was important for each one of us, personal or business identity, to own our own first page on Google. One must know one's keywords and the variations of those keywords. We are able to check every hit on our own name using: 'google.alert'. The next advice was to buy domain names: Buy all! About $400-500/year.

Still on the edge of my chair nervously sipping coffee, I understood that it was a cheap price for protecting my reputation. My, my what might be next? One should build an online profile, either personal or business, or both. This is FREE! And then take on the first ten slots on Google by building some sites. Write articles and remember: Your objective is word domination.

After achieving that, get it up on page one on Google. To get there and to stay there you have to connect with links, hyperlinks preferably--the more the better in order to be on page one.

At this stage, Kent told a romantic little story from his teenage years of how he aspired to get a date with the hot cheerleader. In the Google world it would be of equal value--or a zillion times hotter--to get a connection/date with a hyperlink who already has a huge number of attached links--admirers for the cheerleader.

Well, I was still on the edge on my chair because I am concerned about the site of my work and will defend it like a tigress, since I love my work at The Canterbury!

Kent added afterwards on the side that his company can help me with that. And I am convinced it matters, like Greg said at the start of Kent's engaging and scary talk.

Kent's PowerPoint presentation may be downloaded at www.InternetReputationManagement.com/rotary. To open it requires the latest version of PowerPoint. For a PDF version, e-mail Christine Barnicki.

July 23 program:
Wired. The Shocking Truth About Your Electric Bill

We're all getting "smart meters" this summer. No need to sign up. It'll just be a done deal at your residence and business between June and August this year.

What does this mean, exactly? According to the Edison website, SCE will begin to measure your monthly energy usage remotely, rather than by visiting your property. Later, new programs and services will become available for customers with smart meters.

But that's not the entire story. Join us on July 23 to find out more as SCE representative Bernice Maldonado presents a most informative program.

Perfect for guests!

July 30 program:
Like Frogs in the Warming Pot

Retired Navy Captain Ron Waldermuth has chosen a different direction than we expected for the program about water that he will present on July 30.

Ron, a former public relations adviser to General Normal Schwarzkopf before, during and after the Gulf War, is now the governmental affairs manager for the West Basin Municipal Water District. There is a water crisis but since he's selected as his topic title something that refers to the Boiling Frog Syndrome, apparently the problem, like our new Rotary club president, ain't gettin' no attention.

Bring your guests!

August 6 program:
District Governor Doug Baker

August 6 is District Governor Doug Baker's official visit to our club. Your publisher would dearly like to include a short bio of this surely outstanding Rotarian but his reputation and background are almost impossible to find on the Internet. Did last week's speaker, Kent Campbell, TCB (take care of business) for Doug?

Among the few morsels of information to be found online is the above photo of Doug and his wife, Connie, taken in 2005 in El Salvador, where representatives of our district gave wheelchairs to those in need. So we know he's a humanitarian.

It can also be discovered online that Doug, a member of the Downey Rotary Club, has a flair for creating and starring in sci-fi adventures, a la Star Trek, complete with a Rotary message. To view this fun footage, click here.

But certainly there must be more to this governor of ours. Join us on August 6 discover what Doug Baker is all about.
