Prez Keith says . . .

Thank you Mr. D.K. Kim, president of BP Industries, whose Foundation is a major supporter of education both here in California and abroad. Mr. Kim's Foundation made a donation of $6,000 to our upcoming "Educator of the Year" signature event.

I send our great appreciation to Gail and Bob Johnson for the introduction to Mr. Kim. I also thank Rotarians who have made contributions through July 15. They are, by last name, Barnicki, Zimmerman, Attig, Moon, Polen, Gulcher, Donner, Hartman, Fishman, Ignon, Behrens, Schuricht, and Kitter. Community sponsors to date include Torrance Health Care Center, Little Company of Mary, Southern California Edison, and Bay Cities Bank. We thank these Rotarians and businesses. The Committee has raised $19,800 to date. Congratulations! Mark your calendar for our signature Educator of the Year event on November 3, 2010.

Please update your online profiles. You should continue to "click 'n' pick" your way through Club Runner to be aware of what's happening in your Club!

Make sure you join Governor Doug Baker here at our club on August 6 to hear him explain why being "asleep at the wheel" makes him bigger, better, bolder. You must be present to understand.

District Picnic September 12, 2010.

Don't miss Ron Waldermuth this Friday. Ron is the former public relations advisor to General Norman Schwarzkopf. He will enlighten us on the "Boiling Frog Syndrome.

See you then!

If You Missed Us on July 23

Edison SmartConnect is Here, As Are New Rate Plans

--by Suzy Zimmerman

Promptly at 12:15 Prez Keith Deisenroth opened the meeting with a warm welcome to everyone. John Evans led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moving invocation was given by Woody Woodruff and Dave Rowe led us in a heartwarming God Bless America. This followed with guest introductions made by Greg Sparkman. Suzy Zimmerman led the Welcome Song to serenade Debra Deitch's sister, Sandy, and John Evan's guest, Sister Beverly Flynn.

Shell Hellberg recently visited his friend Sven Hedstrom in Sweden. Dr. Hedstrom is the head of Rotary International Doctors in Africa and while helping in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa he was given a Rotary Traveling Trophy by the local Rotary Club. Dr. Hedstrom delivered this trophy to Shell, asking him to pass it along.

The Prez reviewed the speakers scheduled for the upcoming meeting. We surely don't want to miss the presentation on how to boil frogs, set for this Friday by Ron Waldermuth from the West Basin Water District, or District Governor Doug Baker, aka "Asleep at the Wheel."

Raffle winners for the week: The red prize went to Aryn Sieber and white prize went to the new city manager of Bell, Carolyn Lehr. Aryn Sieber, Joan Behrens and Greg Sparkman recently attended a LA5 Rotary meeting held at the California Club. Greg, his wife, and Inga Liden also attended a Rotary meeting in Rancho Santa Fe with rock star Chubby Checker. We were all encouraged to try to attend another Club's meeting. Also, a reminder to all to bring your laptop to the August 13 meeting as Greg Sparkman will provide us with a tutorial on the utilization of Club Runner.

Our guest speaker was Cynthia Brown from SoCal Edison. She proceeded to provide us with information on the controversial new Smart Meters.

Electricity meters are getting smarter
Our electricity grid is getting smarter, and smart meters play an important role. So far 1 million+ Edison SmartConnectTM smart meters are in place at homes and small businesses throughout the Edison service area. Over the next three years we will replace an additional 4 million older, mechanical meters with new smart meters.

What will smart meters do for you? Smart meters will enable you to monitor your electricity use and costs online as easily as you check your family's mobile phone usage or your bank balance. By going to www.sce.com, you will be able to view your household's recent usage in hourly increments or your business' usage in 15-minute increments. New rate plans will guide you in saving energy and money by shifting more of your electricity use to off-peak hours like mornings, evenings and weekends.

With more information at your fingertips, you will be able to reduce your usage during peak hours, lower your electricity bills, and help preserve scarce resources and protect our environment. To learn more about smart meters, visit www.sce.com/smartconnect.

Prez Deisenroth adjorned the meeting promptly at 1:30.

July 30 program:
Like Frogs in the Warming Pot

There's a water crisis in Southern California but it's getting no attention. Our speaker this week, Ron Waldermuth, will try to wake us up. Ron is the governmental affairs manager for the West Basin Municipal Water District, so obviously a guy in the know on the topic. He's also a retired Navy captain and a former public relations adviser to General Normal Schwarzkopf before, during and after the Gulf War. Ron is now. The presentation's title, Like Frogs in the Warming Pot, is a reference to the metaphor of the Boiling Frog Syndrome. After you read a brief explanation of this syndrome, you'll be motivated to get to this program, and to bring your guests, too.

August 6 program:
District Governor Doug Baker

August 6 is District Governor Doug Baker's official visit to our club. His topic? "Asleep at the Wheel." Apparently it has something to do with making Rotary bigger, better, and bolder.
