NASA's Manned Space Flight Program
May 29, 2020
Mike Lauer is a man on a mission. The mission is to put the first man and woman on the moon in 2024. The nozzle product team manager of the Aerojet-Rocketdyne RS-25 rocket engine (a modernized version of the Space Shuttle main engine) began his career at McDonnell Douglas designing hardware for the International Space Station, which continues flawlessly in orbit after 20 years. Later he was the lead designer of the nuclear battery that powers the Mars surface rover Curiosity. Mike has undergraduate and graduate degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Stanford University. When not putting things into space, he enjoys sports with his three children triplets, especially his role as an AYSO soccer referee. We are indebted to the Rotary Club of Wilshire for recommending Mike as a speaker, whom they called "one of the best programs we have ever had." Bring a guest. |

Solar Power: The earth's oldest source of energy is new again
Jun. 05, 2020
Manhattan Beach Rotarian Mark Lipps
Join us this week at Rotary as national motivational speaker and trainer Mark Lipps shares his knowledge of solar energy. A frequent speaker at Rotary clubs, Mark's presentation on "The Five Wins of Solar" also has been featured by the City of Manhattan Beach at a community forum. "I have always been a 'green energy guy'," Mark explains, noting his early use of solar panels, rain barrels and even involvement in dry farming. Lipps is a graduate of the University of Evansville and has more than 30 years experience as a television industry executive. He is a former CEO of the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce. His talk will cover the subjects of recent legislation, the cost of and obstacles to solar, its impact, the evolution of battery power and the future of Southern California Edison. Learn more about this timely topic and later share your new knowledge gained at Rotary with your non-Rotarian friends. Bring a guest. |

Peninsula cities: Coping with the shutdown
Jun. 12, 2020
If you have not heard the name Ken Dyda, welcome to Palos Verdes Peninsula. You are obviously a newcomer.
This coming Friday, RPV City Council Member Dyda--now serving in his 19th (non-consecutive) year in office, including multiple times as Mayor--has been asked to share with us the history of municipal management over the past three months, as our four local cities have struggled to maintain and coordinate essential services on the hill.
Ken is a longtime resident and one of the early city fathers of RPV, first becoming an elected municipal leader not long after the city's incorporation in 1973. An aerospace engineer by day, Ken was dedicated to protecting the peninsula from developers who viewed the spacious and scenic real estate as suitable for maximum density neighborhoods and profitable commercial districts. Even during a period of 32 years out of elected office, Ken was busy serving on City committees and with community organization boards such as Rancho de Los Palos Verdes Historical Society and the Kiwanis Club of Rolling Hills Estates.
We are pleased to welcome Ken back to our club for another visit as a speaker and a most knowledgeable source of information about the challenges of leadership and administration during the most difficult days of the pandemic.
Zoom at noon. The price is free. Bring a guest!

2020 Oaxaca Adventure (Bring popcorn) (Zoom)
Jun. 26, 2020
The 2019-20 yellow brick road has run out of pavement. Along the way, our happy adventure was tested by the wicked witch named Covid 19. Rotary proved itself able to adapt and prevail against challenges tougher than fire, rain and a field of poisonous poppies. Last Friday, Derald reviewed a long, impressive list of accomplishments by our club. A gate beckons ahead. It opens to the shining city of Service Above Self, once again live and in person.
This Friday we had hoped to be back at PVGC for our club's annual patio picnic. Unfortunately, the golf club has not yet opened for events. Instead, we will be Zooming with Governor Melody St. John, whose Humanitarian Trip Team has produced a professional video of the District's February 2020 journey to Oaxaca, Mexico. As most of you have not seen it, I have asked Melody to change the theme of her talk on Friday to sharing the video and answering questions at its conclusion. There will be no lions, tigers and bears. But there will be music, color, fun and excitement. Join us and see why so many people experience their first "Rotary moment" on these annual adventures in giving and friendship. We can't provide hotdogs as had been hoped. But if you sit back with a soft drink and bag of popcorn, you will not be disappointed.
Zoom at 11:45 a.m. Guests of members are welcome.
